| Games are getting worse of late. It's a sad fact but it's true. Mediocre games these days easily get 85%+ ratings. A rating of 100% should be reserved for the best of the best games in a given generation. But I see so many reviewers give perfect scores to games that are good, but far from perfect.

| Isn't it the other way round? Lack of good games leads to inflation of review scores.

| OK! It is a fact that reviews are the opinion of the reviewer and often the scores are determined with a little help from other staff members. It is not a fact that PC Gamer Needs new games to rate highly, all they need is to rate the games as they see them without any bias. Destroying their own credibility to keep up with hype would be the quickest way to failure. For example look at the hype behind Guitar Hero III finally coming to PC look at its score. They already have an ever evolving media industry to keep up with. They definately are not going to lose their editorial integrity to try and generate sales. High scores in a magazine, would that even drive sales? I read them for the opinion and insights they offer. I dont give a damn about what the game scores, if its enjoyable game I will play it, if it is a bad game I will see if there is any redeeming features that they may have missed as it is an opinion they have voiced. The scores are just a quick and easy way of letting people know if the game is up to scratch it is far from the be all and end all of a review it is a small number right at the very end that should tell you something right there. Read the actual review, that is the information that matters. Just because you do not like a game does not mean that it is not a superior game. Graphically Crysis is far superior to most but that is a small part of the game the smallest IMO. The AI is very good in a lot of situations. Sometimes it won't handle stealth as I'd like it. The claim that it is just a generic shooter is pretty much a ridiculous comment. The story line is bland but enjoyable, then again its a computer game, they aren't really known for any riveting plots. At any time I can use several different tactics to engage my enemies. I can get a vehicle and use it in few different ways. I can go all Predator style get in close and kill with my strength. Stealth and snipe. Stealth and lure into a trap. Jump on roofs smash them in on people to kill them and go nuts with a shotty on the survivors, some other use of physics kills are great too. Run so fast at enemies they cower in fear pick them up use them as a human shield while blasting their comrades or toss them into their own minefield. Drive tanks and fly. Engage humans and aliens. Have time limited missions. Fly about in anti gravity. I can run and gun like a generic shooter but I choose to use my imagination to make use of the technology put into the game. There are still a lot of other ways I am sure I have not even figured out to enjoy the opportunities presented in this game. May I humbly suggest you go back and try different tactics and experiment and see how many cool ass situations you can get into in that game. Nothing like driving a jeep at a road block full speed leaping out shooting the tank of gas and watching it explode and scatter Koreans all over the place, going stealth and mopping up the survivors. Generic indeed! Linear in comparison to an open world RPG yes. As a shooter the first half or so is about as non linear as they come yeas you have objectives but you can complete them in a variety of styles. I don't know about the multi-player. I never tried it. How could I with TF2 being in full swing. The statement that pc game quality is steadily declining of late is unfounded. Bio-shock Fantastic. TF2 Brilliant. Portal!!!! Cod4 what an amazing cinematic experience. Gears of war. Company of heroes, Supreme Commander. There are more than that and all of those games or their expansions all came out in the last quarter of 07 alone. I ask you at what time before do you recall such a glut of awesome games?? I don't own a console but some games on those platforms are pure genius too, look at Rock Band and Guitar Hero, Mario Galaxy and the likes. I dug a lot of nes games and thought they where amazing but when you go back and play them they just don't hold up the same goes for all of the older pc games with very very few exceptions, of course maybe others play more older games than I do and can let me know of some gems I am missing out on. Games graphics, AI and game play are continually evolving. Of course there is a lot of people making some very poor games but that does not mean that games are declining in quality its just that a lot of people are trying to cash in on a big booming industry. Go back and play FF7 I did early last year I lasted all of 4 hrs but in its day it was amazing. I also only played HL1 a year before I played HL2 once again in my opinion the second game was more enjoyable. The first was amazing at its time and in comparison to it's competition but that does not make it a better game(and of course for others HL1 may be a better game but that may be nostalgia talking. I doubt if you presented both games to someone at the same time that had never played them that they would say that HL1 is a better game) Some games are getting better a lot of others are crap. I believe score inflation is merely a product of times gone by, there where some fantastic games scored nice and fairly with high scores. Newer games have come out that have improved on those games thus the score goes up. Once that cycle continues enough a lot of games that are worthy will be given high scores and those scores will creep higher and higher it is the nature of the method used, not hype to make games seem better than they are. I am certainly not saying that some games get higher scored reviews than what I would give out, Crysis being one of them but I believe some of the arguments presented here are based on poorly reasoned opinions. Sorry for the huge post but I just wanted to get another point of view up on this site. It really has a lot of interesting opinions expressed. P.S. Vista conspiracy theorists to what ends would Crytek benefit from limiting the use of their own game(does Microsoft write big enough checks for people to cripple their own tech? If so why even have DX9 availability)?? I think you will find some things can be done with DX10 that DX9 can't do without massive resource usage therefore the need to omit some features for people who have not yet embraced next gen. Later when you get Vista and realize oh, all the negative hype is a little out of date(because right now it certainly is) and that you can reliably run anything on vista and still get good performance and also support an effort to push pc gaming forward I hope you will agree. |

| Thank you PhoenixKfz and sorry Dax. I realize the format of my writing is poor and certainly not easy on the eyes. It took me long enough just to type it up and when I copy pasted it in, it had a million extra returns after getting it semi into shape I thought to hell with it, got lazy and posted. But maybe I don't need to apologize perhaps you do genuinely enjoy the Wall o' text Thanks for the feedback! Itzasz, I am not sure if you believe I am a returning member, I think that's what you are saying, but it is the first time I have posted on this forum the user name Stryfe is a common one.
