Its a web based applications made for Exchange servers which allow web access, therefore removing the necessity to leave open access to the web server itself to outside networks.

Which is why I scratch my head when I mention outlook web access, and people say "I use (suchandsuch)!"

It's like saying "I buy a car because I need to get to work!"
And somebody replying "I have a credit card, so I can buy a sandwich, why don't you try that, instead?"
