Microsoft Vista Service Pack 1 - What to expect Quote: Microsoft is set to release Vista SP1 very shortly to the public. But don’t expect many visible changes. Apart from a noticeable speed increase the majority of users will not see any difference. Microsoft have concentrated the updates on the operating performance, security and reliability. There has been a lot of chatter on the net about a new Kernel but Microsoft have been trying to dampen worries about the changes saying;
"The kernel has not been re-engineered. However, some APIs have been introduced through SP1 [Service Pack 1] which help ISVs [independent software vendors] develop software to run on 64-bit PCs (they patch the kernel), EXTRACT FROLM zdnet.co.uk http://news.zdnet.co.uk/software/0,1000000121,39292667,00.htm
To be honest, I’m running the official final release on Vista Enterprise and the only application that had any issues at all with SP1 was Microsoft MSN Messenger, you need to uninstall it and install version 8.5.1288. Application such as Adobe CS3 Design suite, Admin Script Editor plus a lot of other various applications had no trouble at all.
All in all, I personally don’t think anyone has anything to worry about with SP1, in fact it’s probably the smoothest SP installation I’ve seen from Microsoft. Looks like the improvements that Microsoft has made to its beta programs are really starting to pay off.
