Default Internet Explorer 8 Beta 1 blocks access to Windows Update!!

IE8 balks at Windows Update | InfoWorld | News | 2008-03-10 | By Gregg Keizer, Computerworld

Quote:
IE8 Beta 1 was released Wednesday after an unveiling at MIX08, the Web developer conference Microsoft hosted last week in Las Vegas. The preliminary version runs on Windows XP , Vista, Server 2003, and Server 2008.

Users were understandably confused when IE8 refused to call up Windows Update. "After updating my IE7 to IE8 today, I tried to update my Windows Vista by visiting the Windows Update Web site, but then I was redirected to an error page," said a user identified as zkyboy on a Microsoft support newsgroups. "Why? IS IE8 not the latest version browser?"

To reach Windows Update, IE8 Beta 1 users must click on the "Emulate IE7" button, which switches the new browser into IE7 mode. That requires a restart of IE8, however.

"Windows Update is updating their site to support IE8," said a Microsoft employee named Eric Law in a comment to an IE development team blog post last Thursday. "For now, click the Emulate IE7 Button, restart all IE windows, and visit [Windows Update]. Sorry for the inconvenience."
Wow Microsoft can't even get its software to work together

Kinda funny, but it's in Beta form. You expect stuff like this.

It shows you that Microsoft is too big for its own good. Things like this should of been sorted during alpha testing.

Its probably because of the switch to using Open protocols instead of their proprietary protocols they used in previous versions of IE. Windows Update doesn't recognize it as a proper IE browser.

That is exactly why it happened. I applaud Microsoft for finally bringing a browser that is standard complaint, but still there is more to be done.

Opera's just pissy that IE and Firefox are better browsers.

No they aren't. Opera is a lot faster than both and has very excellent and innovative features. Presto (the core of Opera) is an excellent rendering engine, even Adobe is using it.
Why it isn't as popular, I can't really tell. IE comes with Windows, so it is the default for a lot of people, FireFox is customizable and Free Software. Opera isn't Free Software and isn't customizable, so that might be part of the reason.

CSS and CSS2.0, the web standards Microsoft finally committed to implement were introduced by Opera.

Opera isn't free?

LMAO.

No wonder nobody is taking their browser seriously.

Adobe can get away with charging for stuff like Photoshop and Acrobat because, they are truly advanced tools. Problems like Paint and Notepad are free on the other hand. Huge differences.

Opera isn't much different from IE or Firefox, charging for it is so stupid.

You confused Free Software with Freeware. Opera is for free, you can download it without paying a single penny. I meant it isn't Free in the sense of freedom, you have no access to the source code, and you have no right to modify it and publish your modification, just as it is with Safari and IE. Unlike Opera, Safari and IE come bundled with an OS so they become the default for a lot of people. FireFox is a crossplatform Free Software, as in you have access to the source code and you can modify it and use it as you wish.

Quote:
``Free software'' is a matter of liberty, not price. To understand the concept, you should think of ``free'' as in ``free speech,'' not as in ``free beer.''

Free software is a matter of the users' freedom to run, copy, distribute, study, change and improve the software. More precisely, it refers to four kinds of freedom, for the users of the software:

The freedom to run the program, for any purpose (freedom 0).
The freedom to study how the program works, and adapt it to your needs (freedom 1). Access to the source code is a precondition for this.
The freedom to redistribute copies so you can help your neighbor (freedom 2).
The freedom to improve the program, and release your improvements to the public, so that the whole community benefits (freedom 3). Access to the source code is a precondition for this.
A program is free software if users have all of these freedoms. Thus, you should be free to redistribute copies, either with or without modifications, either gratis or charging a fee for distribution, to anyone anywhere. Being free to do these things means (among other things) that you do not have to ask or pay for permission.
