This is true, they just dropped the bombshell of G5 out of nowhere, it blew away everything that was out at the time.

You are a hardcore macintrash, aren't you?

The reason they dont sell more computers is because they charge so much.

Ever wonder why Dell smashes them in sales, or HP? Its because of price.

The price difference between Dell and Apple does swings in Apple's favor when talking of the high end machines. The Mac Pros were introduced at a vastly lower price point than what Dell was offering for a dual socket system. Since then, the price difference has narrowed but with full equivalent hardware, I believe Apple still holds the price edge.

It is really the low end of the PC spectrum where Apple simply doesn't want to compete. The low end systems cut all sorts of corners to keep prices down but reliability be damned. As much as it would be nice to see a nice cheap tower from Apple, it likely isn't going to happen anytime soon. The Mac Mini is supposed to be the competition from Apple in this desktop area but is more of a small form factor niche machine. In the small form factor area, Apple isn't that bad in terms of price. The Mac Mini is undercut by cheap commodity PC towers that offer more expandability which is actually its main comparison.

As far as the iMacs goes, yes they are due for an update soon. The high end iMac is expected to go quad but clock speeds aren't expected to change much. The good news is that they're going to be upgrading the graphics hardware. Intel recently announced new mobile chips (which the iMac uses for its small enclosure) and Apple tends to wait a few weeks to build up supply before release. My guess is that an iMac update will happen sometime in early April.

The PowerMac G5's were expected six months before released when IBM announced the PowerPC 970. Many were wondering what took Apple so long in releasing them.

Dell is cheap, plain and simple. They produce unreliable pieces of trash made of failure. However, Dell is happy enough to charge next to nothing for their junk, so you do get what you pay for. Dell has also acquired several smaller but notable companies to help increase its market share. Alienware for example is now owned by Dell and is calculated into Dell's market share. If Dell actually cared about the quality of their products, they'd have to start charging more.

HP only got its position as the 2nd largest PC market by merging with Compaq and some smaller PC outfits. They to produce cheap commodity systems that aren't worth much but tend to be better than Dell's.

After HP and Dell, Apple is actually the third largest PC maker in the US. The one thing Apple hasn't done is merge left and right with other manufactures which helped increase its market share (the only one I know of is where Apple acquired Mac clone maker PowerComputing over a decade ago).

Acer is not far behind Apple but that's also because Acer now includes Gateway and eMachines due to mergers. The rest of the PC market, which is nearly a quarter of total shipments, makes up the rest.

Regardless, Apple sells quite well and does more sales than the majority of other companies in the hardware business.

I hope so, it really is time for a new computer for me but I hate it when you buy something just to have the next generation of it (with better performance) being released at the same price a week later.

DAMIT!

Come with an update won't you stupid ¤"##@$£ apple, I've been holding off buying an iMac now waiting for the update (the net is full of rumors about an speed boost update coming "soon").
And just now on my way home from work my local computer shop had 500 kr off (~$80) on the 2,4 GHz 20" model that I want to buy. (as a reference apple store sells it for 13 495 kr (~$2 250) this store normally sells it for 12 995 kr (~$2 165) and now has it for 12 495 kr (~$2 080)) >.<

Quad core iMacs are in the works, since Intel is bringing Quads to notebooks
