Im with Thom on this. Media player has wonderful library management with an interface that makes sense unlike *cough*itunes*cough*. It is a bit of a hit on resources, but not as bad as the aforementioned iTunes or realplayer or musicmatch. It plays dvds, movies, music, and pictures. The User interface can be customized pretty well. Ripping and burning cds can't get much simpler than how it is in media player, and it takes advantage of any special features the cd burner has. You can encode music in WMA or MP3, which covers you for most media players, and can sync with most players as well (unlike iTunes).

It does get fussy when you play something you dont have the proper codec for, but what doesn't?

Overall, its probably the best freebie program Microsoft offers.

WMP isn't a resource hog at all. It's only using 12MB of RAM right now, and my system idles at 1% CPU usage with WMP on. I do have a dedicated sound card, but failtunes uses so much more.

MS's system's also really poor for formats it wasn't meant for. It's easy enough to add codec support, but container formats are another story all together. So it just comes with everything to make their lives easier.
