Well, NetFlix isn't exactly brewing up tons of new business lately, so this isn't that huge a deal. I mean, is any of this even news anymore? Seems like a bunch of gloating over a war that's already over - and kind've has been for some time now. Why gloat about a company who insisted on creating their own standard for the umpteenth time - and maybe FINALLY won once? You're setting yourself for humiliation and disappointment if you ask me - especially in backing a company like Sony in a tiny battle over a much larger war that you still might not win.

If anyone but Sony owned this format, I think it would've taken off even quicker - but it seems there are a lot of Sony haters out there who aren't budging on blu-ray. I love it, of course.

Some people refuse to admit that the war is over until Toshiba says so, or if Paramount and Universal start releasing on Blu-Ray.

It's only a matter of time before that happens....probably once their contracts expire at the latest.

But I notice how the article doesn't mention that NetFlix sees on-demand video being the eventual successor to DVD rentals and that they're moving towards providing to that future? Wonder why nobody's gloating over that?

I like these stories about blu-ray too:

Samsung sued over "defective" first-gen Blu-ray players

Sign me up for some of that Blu-ray, please!

The thing is, Netflix and Blockbuster are the biggest movie rental services (with amazon sitting third) and both are Blu-ray (with amazon multi).

I'm just not a fan of the gloating. A lot of people got screwed. Yes, be happy and this and that, but being happy over someone elses pain isn't right. A lot of people bought HD DVD simply because they can't yet afford blu-ray and then people are going to sit there and antagonize those people? I don't like it.

Actually, NetFlix picked it up last quarter, which I didn't realize, but before then their outlook wasn't so hot (they didn't meet their target for subscribers, however, but they still have a lot). They've teamed up with LG to create a set top box for delivering movies on demand, which seems to be the direction they'd like to head - while of course still delivering blu-ray movies (but of course VoD is where their real money potential is).

The war is so different this time around because consumers have many more options today than when VHS and DVD were going at it. And who knows how long it'll be before another format comes along to try and unseat blu-ray.

While I don't approve of gloating either, especially when money is involved (and generally a lot of money), I am glad everytime news comes out of Blu-ray's impending victory.

Not because I "support" Blu-ray (I only buy it because I have a PS3, if it had HD-DVD, I'd buy that instead) but because it means it's one step closer to one format to stop people being screwed.

Toshiba firesales on HD DVD players only leads people to buy them with little to no knowledge of what movies are available, however disc sales show they don't buy the media for them and probably use them to upscale DVDs and the free HD DVDs, so I'm sure they're not too annoyed.

StreetInsider.com - Best Buy to Recommend Blu-ray as the Customer's Digital Format Choice

Quote:
Best Buy Co., Inc. (NYSE: BBY) is taking a step forward in addressing consumer confusion about high-definition formats. Beginning in early March, the leading consumer electronics retailer will prominently showcase Blu-ray hardware and software products in its Best Buy retail and online channels in the United States.

"Consumers have told us that they want us to help lead the way. We've listened to our customers, and we are responding. Best Buy will recommend Blu-ray as the preferred format," said Brian Dunn, Best Buy's president and chief operating officer. "Our decision to shine a spotlight on Blu-ray Disc players and other Blu-ray products is a strong signal to our customers that we believe Blu-ray is the right format choice for them."
