Yeah, it is a pretty good addition. MS had hinted about this for 360 in the Spring Update but it didnt happen... looks like Sony beat them to the punch.

Congrats Sony

Basically every single downloaded video file in the world is an avi file, it's a common format and playing them directly from your hard drive is Godly.

It's also going to be used for uploading videos into Home.

I tend to favour .mkv when I have the choice. Seems like I'll have to redownload my stuff as avi's though. Or are there plans to support .mkv?

I believe that MKV can use Xvid/DivX, so it might just work.

Cool, I hope it does. It would be a pain to download all of about 40Gb of .mkv files I have =/

There are utilities out there that will tell you which codec a media file uses.. I dont recall one offhand, but if you do some looking around, i'm sure you can find one.

That would be true two years ago. Slowly as high speed internet has made its rounds more high quality codecs have become popular, particularly H264 and MKV. While being able to play DivX is nice it is not a magic bullet. I mean, I can already stream DivX encoded files directly to my PS3 without a hitch, its the MKV files that are a problem because of the multiple streams.

Is it true that the PS3 can do H264 files? I think I read that somewhere and I know I've got some.
