With backwards compatibility unceremoniously dropped from the PS3 with the introduction of the 40GB console, in the latest issue of EGM, Playstation Network director Eric Lempell admitted that there are “possibilities” that Sony will allow gamers to purchase and download PS2 titles via the PSN.

Lempel said "We haven't talked about that yet, but there are possibilities through technology and software emulation to make that possibles," when asked about the possibility by the American magazine, obviously stoking the fires, and letting rumours run free.

As an idea – obviously nabbed from Microsoft and their Xbox Classics – it makes perfect sense. Allow PS3 owners to download the best that the PS2 had to offer for a few quid each, and we’ll all be nice and a happy folks.

But, how keen will people be to download versions of games that they already own physical copies of, and shelled out big bucks for not so long ago? Are we expected to purchase all our favourites yet again if we haven’t the space to keep the PS2 sat under the TV? Sounds like a nice way to extract some extra cash to me.
I also don't under stand how this is stolen from "Xbox Classics" since Microsoft were the last to offer other gen games on their console to download. However, if these games aren't made specifically for PS3, then it hints at software emulation... which means... Backwards compatibility.

What do you mean set to widescreen? Do SA and VC have WS options?
Or are you talking about the upscaler?

Disney offers $10 rebate to people who purchase certain Blu-Ray titles that also own the same title on DVD. Cool promotion that helps encourage people to upgrade their existing collection.

Is Blockbuster in Serious Trouble? - Film Junk
Yes...the "truth hurts." Because I have a personal interest in either company. I couldn't care less whether Blockbuster is doing well or not!

I'd probably look for a more updated report on Blockbuster's outlook though. You're looking at something from over a year ago when they were just getting their online business going.

Today they offer services cheaper than NetFlix and are doing fairly well.

Last I've heard Blockbuster was still having problems even since they've started their Netflix like service. Alas I have no link to provide, but I do remember reading it somewhere recently.

I never claimed to be a math scholar!

I'm not saying Blockbuster didn't have a stretch where they weren't doing well, but they're on the rebound and their online isn't doing that badly at all.

The problem with their quarterly earnings was with startup costs for the internet biz, which is of course enormous. They weren't having too many problems attracting customers, though, and if NetFlix were hammering them so bad, they wouldn't need to adjust their service rates to counter whenever Blockbuster changes theirs.

There are a few services I can get cheaper than NetFlix, and if NetFlix took THEM seriously, they'd be trying to counter their rates as well.

You really think a rental service as huge as Blockbuster is just going to go away? If anything, they'll likely end up with more online customers than NetFlix soon, simply because they're already a well-known company and they have stores that people can relate to.

But I don't CARE either way! I have no stock in Blockbuster or NetFlix, so they can both go to hell for all I care. I'm simply stating what I have seen reported recently.

Problem is that NetFlix is gaining a name for itself as well and when people think of renting movies over the internet NetFlix is more likely to come to mind than Blockbuster is. Too many people remember Blockbuster for the stuffy old ways of renting that they took so long to abolish(ie. late fees) and found a better service in NetFlix. Not saying that Blockbuster won't be able to survive, just that a lot of their former customers have moved on and will probably never go back.
