Yowza. Blu-ray now has 18.2% of the Japanese disc market?

Blu-ray sales hit record in Japan at CD Freaks.com

Quote:
Japan is known as a country were a product or a gadget reaches a huge group of people in a very short time. The Japanese write books on their mobile phones and use mobile internet like it's been there for a century. So, if Blu-ray sales hit a record, than that must be in Japan. The Blu-ray Disc Association claims that the format has gained 18.2% share in the total video market sales in Japan last month.

GfK Japan obtained the data that makes the BDA believe that their format is sold more and more on the Asian island. After a period of decline in December and January, February showed a 18.2% share. DVD remains to be the dominant optical storage medium for entertainment with a 80.5% share. Blu-ray's former competitor HD DVD still represents 2-3% of the total sales, claims the Blu-ray Disc Association.

Back in September Blu-ray's share was a mere 1.3%... What a few months can do to a format, it can die, or it can grow.

Home Media Magazine - Bringing Digital Entertainment To You

Quote:
Blu-ray Disc software sales have seen a sharp spike in recent weeks, since the bruising format war against rival HD DVD came to an end in the middle of February.

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment’s No Country for Old Men realized 9.8% of its total sales from Blu-ray Disc its first five days in stores, according to an analysis of Nielsen VideoScan First Alert numbers conducted by Home Media Magazine’s market research department.

Hitman (view trailer), a 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment title also released March 11, fared even better, generating 12.6% of its total unit sales from Blu-ray Disc.

“That one hit the sweet spot,” said Steve Feldstein, SVP of marketing and corporate communications for Fox. “It’s a great action title that looks beautiful in high-def — and it's right in the crosshairs of Blu-ray’s target demographic of young adult males.”

By comparison, while the format war was raging, unit sales of high-definition discs, either Blu-ray or HD DVD, generally accounted for no more than 2% or 3% of a title’s total sales.
Looks like it's not just Japan that is starting to notice an impact.

Ratatouille is still the best looking high definition film, period. Simply stunning, and probably won't be challenged for that role for a while.

Finally found time to sit down with GT5P (and winning my first 5,000 Cr). The updates keep failing, though.

I've always wanted to be good at a racer sim. Don't have the patience for all the breaking.
