I've even tried my all time favourite SOCOM, and still I just get annoyed of the aged controls and graphics. As I said I picked up MGS3 to get a taste of the characters and the game in general, I find that the controls in it are particularly hard to get used to. Did anyone else find it that way? I always feel the need to play the game but the controls just piss me off to much to play it.
Anyways, I was wondering if buying MGS4 (cause it looks rediculously good and polished...) would be a an ok buy, seeing as ive 1: Never played the previous games 2: I don't like the controls of the game. I've thought that it would be ok to buy it seeing as each game really has its own different plot (they do don't they?), but I just don't want to buy something that really doesn't have control configurations that I would like.
Hope to hear from some of the fans out there. I'm posting this now obviously because the game released yesterday....

I also got MGS3 and also can't seem to get into it for a lot of the same reasons as you. The controls did seem weird, and I too seem to have a problem making the graphical step back in some PS2 games, this one being the worst. I also find that the excessive cutscenes really take away from any flow in the gameplay. You just start to get into it and then have to sit though a 15+ minute scene. I'll likely end up getting MGS4 at some point, but I doubt it'll be before it's $30 or less making it into an impulse buy.
