Default Do we keep the numbers?

We've begun discussing changes to the site in the mod forum, and the first topic to come up is the fate of the sales numbers on the front page. Do we keep them, yes or no? Obviously right now there is no one that is keeping them updated so they aren't very accurate, however if someone was to volunteer to keep track of the sales numbers again, then they could still be worth having.

So let us know what you think(plus if you'd be willing to help with keeping the numbers current). Or if you have any ideas on a different format or structure for the numbers to be displayed in. The poll is just a yes or no option, but feel free to elaborate your position in the comments.

If someone cares to track actual sales numbers down then fine keep them (I won't do that), just as long as we don't use some assumtion algorithm like in the old days.

Numbers do feel a bit like a wasted effort nowdays IMO since Wii has won, landmark numbers like Wii breaks 50 million, PS3/360 breaks 25 million might as well be posted as news when that happens.

Just my opinion on the numbers.

EDIT:// Oh BTW with that motivation I voted "no"

I'm voting no as well, unless somebody steps up that is willing to keep them updated. As they stand now they add nothing positive to the site because they are outdated. Right now they just make the site look bad if there are any guests out there that still come here to get the latest sales count.

I don't mind updating the numbers, I'll duplicate them for Tick-Tech too then. I say we change them to actual released figures rather than a counter that guesses what the numbers are.

From the sounds of things, it sounds like Chibi plans to post the Japanese numbers, and Xisi plans to do the NPD threads, so the numbers should be available on the site. I'll probably do some various comparison stats in each thread comparing the new numbers to previous ones. I guess it would just be a case of putting everything together(and having access to the main page to update them)and then presenting them in a way you see fit.

If you want to do it Daver then by all means, I say keep the numbers. And I'm sure if you need some help with it you should be able to find somebody to give you a hand.

I think everyone knows that I've always advocated pulling the front page. At the very least, the auto-incrementing has to go. Maintaining a 'real sales page' is possible, but I'd recommend not going that route to avoid messy copyright battles with NPD (who forced videogamecharts.com, the good vgcharts, to pull their full compilations of the monthlies).

Hey guys I suggest we set up nexgenwars as a gaming blog website like Joystiq and Kotaku.

1) Easy Maintenance.

All Dennis has to do is download Wordpress, upload to his FTP and direct nexgenwars to it. Admin's can fully take control unlike a regular website that can only be updated by the owner....

2) Chance for Community to Grow!

The community here can all pitch in with all types of gaming news/reviews/previews/etc. and if we have some people who make very good quality exclusive reviews, then people will visit for their gaming fix and it will work as this website is an established site still being ranked like 50,000 on Alexa.

3) VGChartz has it covered.

I don't think numbers would mean anything now. VGchartz breaks it all down, detailing everything, even including game sales. Competing would not make sense now as that website has professionals working everyday, we couldn't keep up.

A good fairly accurate and basic picture of the current sales numbers would still benefit the site. People could post them in their sigs and we could have it downloadable as an image so it could be added to other websites etc. All the time directing people here.

I agree Walshie that we shouldn't compete with VGChartz anymore but I still think a basic cover should still help us.

One other thing we haven't thought about is use the manufacturers shipped figures? They are only updated every 3/6 months but we wont have any legal problems there. Plus at this late stage they wont change that much (relatively) anyway.

I don't know if that would work now though. We would have to figure out how to put in that crazy code James did.
