Wii usb port, well, what is its purpose? can flash cards/disks be plugged in it? what what what?

Keyboard, and that's all at the moment. Lack of support for external drives is a weak point for the Wii and it's small flash memory... and should be remedied ASAP. Hope Nintendo says something in GDC. We've only got 2GB SD cards in the meantime...

i really dont see ninty worrying too much about updated SKU's when they still cant stock their original one...

It wouldn't be a SKU, but a firmware update. It would simply be having the OS kernel have the proper drivers/modules for USB mass storage drives. I mean, if a small open-source Linux kernel can do it, the Wii OS kernel should be able to. Nintendo would just need a bunch of systems programmers to write the driver code...

A Wii OS which could simply recognize and be able to store data on USB external drives, though the ultimate thing would be to be able to run VC/Wiiware things of external storage. We'll see what they'll do, considering that WiiWare is going to be talked about this week at GDC. It's given that they need at least the storage support for WiiWare to take up.



And yes, Wii system updates are free over the Internet, so an OS update would probably come via that.
