Default Will the shortages continue in 2008?

I remember the original estimations for the PS3 and Wii to be that the Wii would be on shelves in force by March and the PS3 would be that way in June/July. Well, the PS3 made it March/April in many regions and the Wii still isn't in stock, so any new guesses?

Right now, they are selling as fast as anyone can get them in stores. If you have a Wii, it never makes it to the shelf. Many are sold directly out of the shipping boxes.

Should I be telling the guys around here who want to get one for them/their kids/others that they either have to wait hours for one or wait until March? June? August? 2009?

Is 30 million out of range for March 2009? (Nintendo estimates that they will have sold 16.5 million by March 08)

Any thoughts on this are welcome.

The only reason the PS3 made it to March/April was because it wasn't released till then in some regions. It was in stock well before Christmas last year unlike what Sony migh've told people. However, this is about the Wii. I reckon the Wii will be out of stock till June next year in USA and a little earlier in Europe. They are now making 1.8 million a month and there's no way it can continue at that pace for another whole year. I think it may go out of stock again next Christmas though as the sales will stay brisk for the whole year and Nintendo wont have a chance to stockpile many.

It did ok in Europe (wasn't released until later though) and parts of the US. By March or April though, in the US, you could basically find them if you looked.

I really can't see this continue to going on. It did look like it was dying down and started to be seen in some areas again. Then when the holidays rolled around they flew off the shelfs. My prediction, it will sell now and for some time into the new year. But it should be easier obtainable again shortly.

I wouldn't be so quick to call this one guys. Remember, a year ago everyone was thinking that the "gimmick will wear off" and the hype would be gone by Q4 at the latest. Apparently not. I really wouldn't be surprised to see this type of thing go on for 3/4 of 2008, or even the whole thing. I'm not saying it will, maybe demand will be met... but the Wii is a beast.

recent history? Try all of history. The Wii has more demand:supply than any console ever.

I say June of 08' is when you will be able to find them easily. I think stuff would slow down in March but Melee is still sold for $30 new and was released over 6 years ago + never left the Gamecube's top 10 sellers list... ever. Thus, I think Brawl will sell some serious consoles. I still know of some people who own 360's or don't own any current-gen console yet and are waiting for Brawl to buy a Wii.

I know. Really though, I can't see it happening for this year though. It wouldn't be surprising to see it happen though. Like you said, it is a beast.
