Good to know they already have a standardized form letter response for it. As I said before, I'm not a HUGE online gaming fan, so it's not as big a worry to me as some people... but it's not something I'm really happy about. Whether I'm worried about it or not, I know that a lot of people are, and I'm well aware that bad online will hurt sales, which will hurt things like third party support... which will hurt me in the long run.

But yeah... can't say that their reply really made me feel like things are looking any better.

My reasoning is that if that were not the case, they would have said something like "We haven't confirmed use of game-specific friend codes" or "What you have heard is no more than rumors", etc. Instead they basically said "Yeah, we're having a lot of complaints about how we're doing this"

I was trying to be optomistic about it too, but I'm sorry, I don't think it looks good.

To whom it may concern,

First, let me thank the good people of Nintendo Company, Limited as well as Nintendo of America. The collective hard work and dedication of the Nintendo brand and its employees have provided me with a lifetime of entertainment for which I am truly grateful.
In regard to recent talk of the possibility of the Nintendo Wii utilizing a similar system as the Nintendo DS for online play (the friend code system) I must assure you without a reasonable doubt that such a move is undesirable not only for myself, but for the gaming community as a whole.

Online communication is an ever evolving and developing phenomenon, but the people who utilize these technologies are also growing. The time is upon us to accept the new realizations of such technology not just for entertainment but also as a way of life. A means of communication, connection, and expression as well as interaction.

The friend code system is cumbersome, dated and unattractive. Expecting the end users of your product to shoulder the burden of a sixteen-digit code as they move from game to game is not only an unreasonable request but a shameful eyesore for a system that has so much more potential.

In closing, when going about the task of creating your new online business model please take into consideration the desires of the modern game going community and try to connect with your fans to that end. You have a wonderful tool in the Everybody Votes channel. Try opening a developer's blog. You might be surprised at the feedback that you receive.

Well, I decided to go for the direct approach and unfortunately you are right. The friend codes will be game specific. Here is the email I sent them:

However, my understanding was that each game had a separate friend list where you simply picked people from your address book meaning only one set of friend codes (hopefully this is true). I can confirm that the Friend Code system in the Wi-Fi Connection (WFC) service for Wii will be the same as it was for the Nintendo DS, meaning game-specific Friend Codes and a separate Friend Roster are used in each game where players can play with identified friends.
