It was a launch title in the US. It came out in January in Japan, and Feburary in the other regions.

But it was "done" as a release title and had the ability to read mp3's off of an SD card, at least in the US version. I have done it.

The Wii can play custom songs from an SD-card. It has been done.
Hopefully they'll put it in.

For monday: Custom songs! If it doesn't come then it will never. (and yes that's a prediction I won't get point for until the last update)

On the last IGN Wiik in Review they said that they called Nintendo who said it was not an official box art. But it could be an unofficial release for websites and stores to use as a placeholder until an official one is ready, or it could be fan speculation.

I can't wait until Matt writes the editorial on the lack-of-headset. I hope he shows no mercy, maybe Nintendo will do something about it if he really beats them up on it.
