Default Prime example of why Vista isn't ready for gaming

Ever notice that Vista tends to be a memory hog? Ever encounter an out of memory error while gaming?

Well it seems that the problem has been isolated. One of Vista's advancements has been the virtualization of graphics memory. This allows for multiple applications to be utilizing it simultaneously. It is just that under 32 bit Vista, things can get kinda cramped in the virtual memory space if several application are using it. MS has created a hot fix that addresses some of the memory bloat.

The result is that games take up less RAM than before. Instead of games taking upwards of 60% more RAM, the additional bloat of Vista is around 14% with the hot fix compared to Windows XP. Performance is the same if you've got enough RAM, but I suspect that if you're running with 2 GB or less memory, chances are that you'll see slight performance gain with this hot fix.

This patch isn't going to be distributed via the normal automatic updating process. Its scheduled release is going to be rolled into Vista SP1.

As usual with most Microsoft OS, it's not usable until they have rolled out a service pack or two. There's just too much undiscovered "rubble"....

I've not had any problems gaming...

I can play all the latest games on High and get a solid 30fps.

Does this only affect the 32bit version? Cos I have X64.

Other than the fallowing Vista plays games great:

Vista uses 2/3 of my 1g of Laptop RAM when idle
Slow loading times
Many of my favorite older games either don't work or have major issues
Despite my good graphics card I am forced to turn the resolution down so more graphicly intense games can run

Oh................I guess it sucks for gameing.

The RAM bloat for games effects both versions of Vista, it is just that you won't notice the out of memory errors as 32 bit applications under Vista 64 bit can use more than 2 GB of RAM. I suspect that this hot fix will make its way into the 64 bit version just to reduce RAM usage.

Xp sucked before SP2. Same with Vista until they roll out the SP's. It's just the way it works.
