On the controller topic, nothing but an SNES controller or a DualShock are used in my house for any type of fighting game 2D or 3D, and ALWAYS with the precise D-pad and not the imprecise stick. Brawl, Soul Calibur anything, and Guilty Gear will all conform to the SNES controller and Dualshocks. When you need to pull off moves that require quarter-circles and half-circles (Guilty Gear), the D-pad is just way more reliable...

However, MOST pro fighting gamers will always get the Hori Stick (Wii, PS2, PS3, or 360) for a real fighting game experience, though there are some people who like their Dual Shocks and SNES controllers. :P

SF2 is a part of my childhood... but it's lacking the complexity that SF3 and other newer 2D games have, so I'm not sure if even an "HD" version will be enough to draw me back to playing its dated system again.

Actually to be honest with you, I find that the XBOX/XBOX360 pads do have responsive D-Pads, I had no problem getting my groove on with Guilty Gear X2 #Reload with it. I prefer the PS2 pad, but the PS2 didnt get that version of Guilty Gear X2, which was the best version. Instead it got the atrocious Guilty Gear Isuka.

The main problem with the 360 dpad is that it sticks out so much, really. The PS2s d-pad is a lot more non-intrusive, it is more comfortable to play with. I dont really think the PS2s d-pad is any more responsive than any other d-pad, its nothing special in that department, but the comfort of using it gives it a definite advantage for extended playing.

Isuka... ick. I agree that the XBox controllers aren't THAT bad to play with, since we had to play Soul Calibur II with the original XBox controllers when we didn't have a PS2. You can still be effective with it, but I agree that it's mostly comfort that draws me to the SNES, Wii Classic, and Dualshocks for the various fighting games and not necessarily responsiveness (all of them respond as well as they need to be).

You didn't like Slash or Accent Core (the version that is now my current fighter)?

You mean this product, right?

(Your link was bad)

I'd have to feel it in my hands first, but if that D-pad works well, it's a start. I'm skeptical though, since it's MadCatz, and I haven't had great experiences with them at all.

Unfortunately, I don't have a system to use this accessory, sir Somebody else has to be the guinea pig in this case.
