Is it worth the 10 extra chicken nuggets or are you better off getting just a wiimote?

Wii Play:
It has been a bit of a mixed affair with Wii Play as to just how fun it is. So for the sake of this review, I will supply the viewpoint of both a hardcore gamer and a casual gamer.

Shooting Range:
The game is absolute genius for multiplayer, but single player will get old once you master it. The diversity is nice and it is impressive how they managed to diversify this minigame so much while keeping the same controls intact. One second your shooting a duck as it flies by, the next your blasting an alien spacehip to bits as it attempts to abduct your Mii's.
harcore: 3/10- this will get repetitive for you very fast. If you prefer games that require lots of strategizing and have a lot of depth you won't like this... at all.
casual: 8/10- this game is great to try to master in single player mode, and is even more fun with a friend or family member. The comic relief of watching Mii's get abducted (especially when they are your enemies) is oddly amusing.

Find Mii:

For those who have never picked up a controller in their life, you will probably enjoy this game for a while. However, even if your the type to only play games every once in a while this will be far too slow paced.
hardcore: 2/10- the game requires a sharp eye, not much else.
casual: 4/10- you might be amused for a little while, but after 1-2 multiplayer bouts you won't visit this again

Table Tennis:
This is the absolute most hectic game in Wii Play. If you happen to blink at the wrong moment it could mean game over, and if anything that is an understatement because I've lost even when I blinked at the right moment. This game will pull you in and not let go until YOU miss, because the computer never misses in 1-player mode.
hardcore: 7/10- it is very repetitive, but the difficulty is ridiculous. However, multiplayer mode is rather short and if you don't have someone of equal skill level, it is also very boring.
casual: 10/10- you will be coming back to this game forever. 1-player mode will challenge you to no end and multiplayer is almost equally enticing.

Pose Mii:
The prettier of the “Mii” sisters. 'Pose' is better than 'find' in every way. 1-player mode and 2-player mode are equally fun and equally difficult. The first few levels are pretty easy and you'll most likely get a perfect score, but once you get up to level 7 and beyond the pace is ridiculous. The background is also cleverly distracting, being a beautiful pattern one level only to become a chicken the next.
hardcore: 6/10- it'll be fun for a while, but once you master it you'll grow bored.
casual: 8/10- If any of the minigames will catch you with a smirk on your face, this is the one. Stealing bubbles from your opponent is sickeningly addictive.

Laser Hockey:

In this game, almost everything was done right but the few flaws are ones it really shouldn't have. The art style is wonderful and the spark effects that emit from the neon puck as you hit it are amazing. However, it would be even more amazing if you could hit the puck faster, as you'll often find yourself wishing you could speed it across the court. However, the speed is still decent and I've found that if you hit the ball with the side of your paddle you can, for some odd reason, get that speed you were looking for and send it flying into your opponent's goal.
hardcore: 5/10- multiplayer will have you hooked for days. single player will have you ripping youself off the hook as soon as possible.
casual: 7/10- multiplayer will never get old. single player will be fun until you master the play mechanics and get a gold medal

Billiards:

This game is a very good simulation of the actual sport. You and an opponent (or just yourself) whack away at a cue ball in an attempt to get the most balls, in numerical order, into the holes with the fewest fouls. The physics are great and this is one of the most accessible games in the pack as it does not require quick thinking but rather careful planning.
hardcore: 8/10- This game isn't a perfect simulation of the sport as darts is to warioware, but it is still very good and it might just be all you need to keep yourself from buying an entire pool table.
casual: 8/10- This game really doesn't rely on gaming skills, it is the same for everyone and therefore the same reasons that apply to hardcore gamers apply to casual gamers in this situation

Fishing:

The first thing you'll notice about this game is the highly stylized graphics. If Yoshi's Island had a fishing minigame, this would be it. With that said, controlling your fishing hook is a bit of a tedious task, but once mastered feels very natural. The diversity of the fish is a nice bonus as well.
hardcore: 3/10- if you've done the fishing minigame in zelda, this will feel archaic to you. Stay away at all costs unless someone else wants to play with you, in which case the multiplayer holds up decently.
casual: 6/10- Don't get caught up with the nice visuals, it's all about getting big fishies. This game will be very amusing for a while (and maybe even your favorite at first) but just doesn't have the classic, “arcadey” feel of the others.

Charge!:
This game is nice, but is over all too quickly. Basically, you race on a cow in an attempt to knock over more scarecrows than your opponent (or, in 1-player mode, in an attempt to knock them over + cross the finish line quickly). It is a decent game at it's basis, but unfortunately it only lasts for 1 minute.
hardcore: 4/10- this game has an odd charm about it that will have you coming back for a while. However, it is pretty easy to master and once you do you won't be coming back to this game often.
casual: 6/10- Same reasons as hardcore gamers, but you'll probably enjoy it a little longer.

Tanks!:
Judging by the utter confusion of my dad as he desperately attempted to aim and move at the same time, this is the most complex game in the pack. However, it is also the longest lasting with 100 missions to go through. On top of that, the sound effects are absolutely stunning, you really have to hear them, it is one of the few times where the sounds are worthy of taking up half of the summary.
hardcore: 10/10- this game will have you shouting “tank you!” to the gaming gods (sorry for the pun). It is easily the most complex game in the pack and even has some subtle strategy hidden in it. It almost seems like Nintendo's way of saying “Ok, you've played this and Wii Sports, how about you go buy something harder next time.” It is proof that Nintendo wants the wii sports fans to mold into zelda fans.
casual: 6/10- if you can take the time to master the controls you will love this. However, you will be frustrated as hell trying to do the seemingly impossible task of moving and aiming at the same time. To us hardcore gamers it is incredibly simplistic, to a casual gamer it is apparently a multitasking nightmare.

General statements:
I feel that Wii Play shold have come with some unlockable 10th minigame that you get for getting a gold medal in every category. Afterall, 9 is a pretty random number and there is obviously space for a 10th game, it is almost as if a 10th game is supposed to be there. The addition of a more fleshed out minigame would have been nice (AKA the mythical 10th minigame). Overall though, this game is well worth the purchase whether you are a harcore gamer or a casual gamer. If you already have 4 wiimotes just sell the one in the pack to a friend for a dollar under retail price. He can't refuse an offer like that.

graphics- everything is very simple, but very crisp and clean. No jaggies, no blotchy colors, everything they aimed for, they achieved. The fishing game and laser hockey also have a nice art style.

sound- same as graphics except apply it to sound.

gameplay- some of the games basically focus on the same thing and one of them is an absolute dud (find mii), but everything else is great

replay value- this game is good while it lasts and you might find yourself playing some of these years down the road. However, overall a 50.00 minigame compilation such as Mario Party 8 will eclipse this.

overall score: 7.6/10
